DAT BLACK MERMAID MAN LADY / HOME
Created by Sharon Bridgforth
dat Black Mermaid Man Lady/Home will work with Black artists to help them purchase homes/sites for art- centered celebrations while developing approaches to stop displacement in South Minneapolis.
Working in Minneapolis allows Sharon to expand her more than 20 years of work in the Twin Cities,
and to honor her mentor - Laurie Smith Carlos and issues of concern that
Laurie addressed in the Twin Cities, such as housing insecurity, art making and mentorship.
Project Coordinator, MLPS based artist/activist, Molly Van Avery, has helped us secure local partners including: City of Lakes Community and Trust: and Ephraim Eusebio, Lakes Area Realty Powderhorn Branch Manager. We will work with local activists to facilitate community engagement activities such as: home buying, food gardening and money workshops. Plus: creative practice workshops - cooking & story circles and house parties.
The primary vehicle for community engagement will be the
dat Black Mermaid Man Lady/Performance Installation
A collaboration between Walter Kitundu, Sonja Perryman and Sharon.
The performance installation will invite audiences of 7 at a time,
to share their family histories as they interact with
our stories of migrations, loss and the passing on of traditions.
